Perianesthesia nursing

While this profession might not be well heard of, it is experiencing heightened demand in hospitals, nursing homes, and other medical and paramedical institutions all across the US and the world. In essence, a perianesthesia nurse is someone who provides specialized care for patients during surgery, under anesthesia, and coming back to consciousness. Often times, this position requires vigilance because the moments after a surgery, or during an anesthetic induced unconsciousness, are very crucial. This requires a nurse with very specific qualifications and a specialized job description.

A Short Guide to Perianesthesia Nursing

A perianesthesia nurse carries more responsibilities than that of a normal RN. They must be present at the most crucial moments of surgical procedure, and they are entrusted with the task of monitoring vitals and ensuring that the patient stays comfortable. This particular job is exploding with opportunity as the job description is becoming more specific; any time a position is specialized like this, not only does the salary hike, but the position carries extra responsibility.

Perianesthesia Nursing Certification

The perianesthesia nurse position is unique in that it does not yet require state certification. While the government does not yet regulate this position, it’s best to seek out a formal certification, if you want to find a well paying job.

Perianesthesia certification will convey to the employer that you not only want to commit to this field, but that you diligently took steps to ensure that you are properly trained to do the job. Having formal training in perianesthesia nursing will keep you current on the newest procedures and technological advances in the field. It is highly recommended that you get certified if you decide take this route.

In order to be certified, you have to have a good amount of perianesthesia nursing time behind you with a minimum of 1,800 hours of experience. The body that regulates nurse certification is the ABPANC (or the American Board of Perianesthesia Nursing Certification). The nurse must also have a bachelor’s or associates degree, so be sure to account for that before you take steps to acquire your perianesthesia nurse certification.

Perianesthesia nurse salary

For nurses, a perianesthesia nurse position is a relative gold mine. For certified nurses who are also qualified to work in surgery, the salary can soar upwards to $38 per hour. If the perianesthesia nurse does become certified, that nurse can then enjoy the title of either a CPAN (Certified Perianesthesia Nurse) or a CAPA (Certified Ambulatory Perianesthesia Nurse). Either position is extremely coveted, but it is a very lucrative idea to keep becoming more trained, educated, and certified. The higher you climb, the more you get paid.

The Search for Opportunities

Joining with the ASPAN (The American Society of Perianesthesia Nurses) is going to be an excellent decision, as these folks can hook you up with opportunities for advancing your career and can provide invaluable resources. This is a great way to make sure that you’re networked. If a well-paying medical institution is in search of a perianesthesia nurse, they know exactly where to find you.

Dental assistant vs dental hygienist

Dental Assistant v/s Dental Hygienist

If you are under the impression that a dental assistant is the same as a dental hygienist then you must know that you are completely wrong. The only similarity that these two have is they both work under the supervision of dentists but their job profile; their roles and duties all differ from another. Let us look how these two differ in various aspects.

Job responsibilities

  • Dental Assistant: The dental assistant has a host of duties to carry. These mostly include scheduling appointments, maintaining patients’ records, managing inventory and so on. In short, the dental assistant conducts majority of the administrative tasks under the supervision of a dentist.
  • Dental hygienist: The job responsibilities of a dental hygienist mostly tilt towards clinical aspects in a dentist’s clinic. A dental hygienist mostly carries out jobs such as patient screening, removing plague, applying preventative treatments and so on.

Salary Levels

  • Dental Hygienist: It is important for a person to complete a valid educational program to become a Registered Dental Hygienist or RDH. A person also needs to clear a written as well as clinical exam. The certification program and licensing procedure may vary from state to state.

Educational qualifications

  • Dental Assistant: There is no specific education required for a person to become a Dental Assistant. This is mainly because; a person gains more experience in the on-the-job training after entering the work force.

Nurse dating patient

Is It Ethical For Nurse To Date A Patient?

In the healthcare and the medical circles there is often a question that is asked and that is whether it is ethical for a nurse to date a patient. The ethics that are applicable to a nurse are very similar to that of a doctor. In the case of doctors if the patient even gets a different doctor it is still not ethical for the patient to date the doctor. Nurses also fall under the same rule and so in short it is unethical for them to date their patients.

Now the question often arises that when the patient has been discharged and meets the nurse after six months or so it is still ethical for her/him to date the patient? Now if the patient is meeting the nurse on a professional level it is not. That means during the patient-nurse period it is a strict no for them to date.

Now, there is a question that arises in the mind of many people and that is whether the dating of a nurse or a patient is illegal or not? There are some experts who consider the dating part to be unethical however it does depend on the scenario. It is not a very wise idea for everyone to flaunt the news of dating a patient at the healthcare unit. There are many nurses who do date patients and this might include having dinner when not working. The episode can just be a relationship between two adults however it should be kept in mind that this relationship does not affect the work of the nurse. The dating should be done for the right reasons. It should not interfere with the sphere of work or course there could be a cancellation of the nurse’s license.

When it comes to dating you must remember that there are certain ethics that you have to remember while you are working. Nurses do have time to date and it is not essential that they need to be patients. Nurses are very compassionate by nature and they are no different from other people. When it comes to dating and life there are like ordinary women and do need companionship. It is not necessary that all women who are nurses will be dating their patients. This is exceptional and there are cases where the patient does fall for the nurse. It is common to see patients falling for nurses for their caring and compassionate nature.

When it comes to nurse patient dating there is always one thing that should be remembered and that is the relationship should not be one that will affect the work of the nurse. If there is interference and the disturbance of duties the nurse is going to face action. This action may also affect the license of the nurse. Dating a patient should be avoided and the relationship should be on the professional level. Nurses must respect this moral code of conduct so that it does not lead to complications in their personal or professional life.

Nurse practitioner demand

Nurse Practitioner Demand in the United States

The United States in serious trouble, no matter what the politicians are saying on television. This great nation continues to stagger under the burden of a health care system that is in itself in serious need of some medical attention. Not only are there not enough nurses to fill available jobs, soon there won’t be enough doctors to go around either. Statisticians predict that there will continue to be an increase in demand for physicians, as well as other licensed and qualified medical personnel.

Trained and licensed nurse practitioners are one way to fill the gap. Nurse practitioners can do a lot of the things physicians traditionally did, such as perform examinations, prescribe treatment methods, and medications. A nurse practitioner can also order and read X-rays as well as a variety of other tests too.

nurse practitioner demand
nurse practitioner demand

This simple graph illustrates how the demand for licensed nurse practitioners has risen over the last four years between 2006 and 2010. This information reflects the demand for nurse practitioners in the state of Texas. Texas is only one state of many, and although there weren’t graphs available for every one, it is hoped that with this illustration, you start to get the picture of just how big a shortage there is.

Statistics say that there will be an increasing problem with supply and demand when it comes to health care. There will continue to be shortages in available nurses and physicians, it is also estimated that we will be about 150,000 doctors short come the year 2015. This is a grave problem, it is also a problem that more trained and qualified nurse practitioners can help alleviate.

There are over 3 million nurses employed in the United States. It is estimated that there will be another 1 million job openings in nursing next year. Nursing is one of the top professions listed as having the most job openings. It is estimated the demand for qualified and trained nurses will increase until at least the year 2025. There are a few reasons for this. One is that a lot of nurses that are currently employed are older women, who plan to retire in the next ten or so years.

The other reason for this glaring shortage is simple. More people need quality health care than ever before. It it estimated that the population of the United States will reach 350 billion in the next fifteen years. That certainly is a lot of people that will need quality health care.

Nursing schools are trained qualified nurses as we speak. But they are restrained by budget limits, and can only admit a certain number of students. Nursing schools polled said that combined they turned away an estimated sixty thousand nursing school candidates. We obviously need to expand the educational opportunities these talented nurses get. We are going to need them.

Nurse appreciation day

Mnurse Appreciation Day

Mnurse????? hmmm…. Nope! This is not a spelling mistake. Male nurses are called Mnurses. National Nurses Day is the first day of what is known as National Nurses Week. While Male Nurses are often called mnurse there really is no mnurse appreciation day specifically. National Nurses Week runs from May 6th to May 12th every year. This tradition of thanking our nurses for the work that they do for us has been going on since the 1950’s. During National Nurses Week, there is also National Student Nurses Day. National Nurses Week is a federally recognized holiday, thanks to a resolution that was finally passed by Congress in 1982.

During National Nurses Week, people honor nurses with things like parades and banquets. These are special times when people take the time to thank nurses and mnurses around the world for their contribution to our well-being and continued health. Nurses do a thankless and demanding job sometimes, and this week is only their well deserved reward.

There is no particular day that is called Male Nurse Appreciation Day yet. There is a Student Nurse Appreciation day that is celebrated midway through National Nurses Week. Male nurses are starting to make their presence known in nursing, and people are starting to get used to the idea. Look for National Male Nurse Appreciation day coming soon to a celebration near you. There’s still plenty of time for next year.
