Minority Nursing Scholarships

Scholarships for Minority Nursing Students

There are over 2.9 million licensed registered nurses and the minorities percentages are as follows 4.2% are African-American or roughly 122,400 and 3.1% Hawaiian, Pacific Islander or Asian; making that total around 90,000. 1.7% of nurses are of Hispanic or Latin origins or about 48,000 and 0.3% are American Indian and Alaska Native.

From the 2.9 million nurses only 168,181 are men; women make up more than 94% percent of the field.  Most RNs in the field are over the age of 40 with only 8.0% percent of the nursing population being under the age of 30. Generally male nurses are younger than female nurses, 30% of male nurses are younger than 40 and only 26% of women are under 40, but the average age of the RN in the United States for both men and women together is 46 years old. From the 2.9 registered nurses in the United States 2.4 million are employed with an employment percentage slightly over 83%. With a demand for bilingual nurses 88% of Hispanic or Latino origin nurses are employed and only 82% of white or Caucasian nurses. Of the 2.4 million employed nurses more than 50% are employed full time and the percentage depends on the origin or race of the nurse; ranging from 75.2% of Hispanics to 81% of Caucasian full time nurses.

Most RN’s work in hospitals, which employ over 55% of registered nurses or well over 1.3 million. The area in the United States that has the highest minority ratio is the Pacific area of the United States at 19%. African-American nurses have the highest minority ratio in the South Central area of the United States.

Millions of men and women of all ages and races choose nursing career over other career options because nursing is both respectable and high earning career. More and more men now employed as registered nurses.
