The Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) was introduced for the first time in the 2006-2007 school years for those college students who had graduated from high school after the 1st of January in 2006 and for second year college students who had graduated from their high school after the 1st of January 2005. There are certain eligibility requirements for the course that the student needs to adhere to. The first requirement is that the student requires being a citizen of the USA and a recipient of the Federal Pell Grants.

The student also needs to be enrolled for at least half time in a degree program. The student also needs to be a first or second undergraduate student or a student of a certificate program of at least one year of a 2-year or 4 year degree issuing institution.

The student can also be one who has completed a secondary school program after the 1st of January 2006 if the student is a first year student or after the 1st of January 2005 if the student is a second year student. If the student is a first year student he should not be currently enrolled in any ACG eligible program while at or under the compulsory school attendance age. If the student is a second year student he should at least have a cumulative 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale after completing the undergraduate study. In such a program the student receives $750 for the first year of studies and $1,300 for the second year of studies.
