Board of nursing

Know What Is Nursing Board? Whats Its Duty? Why Do We Need It?

A nursing board is a state governmental agency that is responsible for the regulation of nursing practice. It was over 100 years ago that the state governments had established boards of nursing for the protection of the health of the public and its welfare. These boards had the sole responsibility to oversee and ensure the protective and the safe care in the nursing profession. These Boards of nursing have the ability and the duties of laying down guidelines for the standards of safe nursing care. The nursing board also has the sole responsibility of issuing licenses that pertain to the practice of nursing.

When the nursing license is provided the Board has the job of monitoring these licensees’ compliance to the laws that have been laid down by the state. They also have the sole responsibility of taking license action against nurses who have demonstrated a usage of nursing practice that is an unsafe one.

There are duties of the Boards of Nursing that also determine the main administrative responsibilities and supervision of the Board. The nursing reports of the Board need to be provided to the governor of the state, both the governor and an agency of the state, any state agency and another organizational or state official.
All the Board decision making powers and the structures are different and unique for each nursing Board. The individuals who are serving on the board are appointed as per their position and the state law has the power to dictate the membership of the Board that includes a blend of registered nurses, consumers, advanced registered practice nurses and licensed practical and vocational nurses.

The members of the Board need to meet often to monitor and oversee the nursing activities. They are also empowered to take disciplinary action on the licenses of the nurses whenever required. The Board had the typical powers of ensuring that the provisions of the nurse practice act are reinforced as well as the nurse licensure. The Board also has the power of accrediting and approving the nurse educational programs in both the universities and schools. They also develop practice standards and develop the policies and the rules and the regulations of the administration too. The responsibilities and the scope of the Board varies from state to state. In the USA it is the sole responsibility of the nurses for knowing the requirements for the regulation that is required for nursing and the Nurse Practice Act in each and every state these nurses are practicing in.

Every state has its own Nurse Practice Act that is enforced by the Nursing Board of that state. The nurses need to comply with the law of that state and all its related rules so that they are able to maintain and manage their licenses. The main provisions of the law describes the qualifications that are needed for the licensure, the titles of the nurses that are allowed to be used, the scope of what the nurse can do and the actions that are possible if the nurse does not follow the provisions of the law that has been laid down.
